CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Breakfast at the OK Corral

“OUCH!” Bo roared, as steaming, hot coffee missed his cup and splashed his blue-jeaned thigh.

“Oops.” The curvaceous, redheaded waitress affected an insincere smile. “Guess I’m a little ‘distracted’ this morning.”

Bo winced and fanned his leg. “Come on, darlin’, don’t be like that. I told you you’ll have my full attention tonight. I promise.”

“Umm-hmm. You’re just one big promise after another, aren’t you?” she said sourly.

Willard chuckled. “Don’t take it personal, ma’am. He’s a drummer; their minds sort of wander.”

“His can wander wherever it wants to as long as it doesn’t bring him to my door again,” the waitress snapped, as she stalked away.

Fred sighed. “Thanks a lot, Bo. There goes our only hope for a fresh pot of coffee! I see we’re off to a great start this mornin’, as usual. Speaking of which, anybody heard from the boss?” He scanned the restaurant.

Bo nodded toward the door. “There’s the man himself, front and center.”

Jack spotted them and waved. “Good mornin,’ reprobates! How’s the food? I’m famished!”

Willard, Fred, and Bo eyed each other warily. In all their years traveling together as Road Kill, they could count on one hand the times Jack Bisbee had eaten breakfast.

“Who are you, and what have you done with Biz-Boy?” Willard demanded.

Jack grinned. “It’s amazing what a little peace and quiet—and a good night’s sleep—will do for a man. What are y’all up to today?”

“Hadn’t really thought about it,” said Willard. “You hear anything from Cal last night—or the guy from Tugalo Records?”

Jack clapped Willard on the back. “Come on, now! It’s too early in the day to talk business. Can’t a man bond with his buddies? I’ve been rough on you guys the last few days; we’re due for some fun. When’s the last time you boys went fishin’?”

“Been a while,” Bo admitted.

“What about that amp we gotta fix, and all them guitar strings we gotta replace?” Willard asked.

“Plenty of time for that later. Wonder where we can round up some poles and bait?”

The men were deep in debate over the best way to catch bass when C. J., Amanda, and Sue shuffled in from the lobby. Graham tagged along behind. “Mornin’, everybody!” he greeted. “Are we all rested up and happy?”

“As bird dogs on a duck hunt!” Jack pronounced with a jovial salute.

Graham looked to Willard for an explanation of their formerly foul-tempered leader’s adjustment in attitude, but only got a “Beats me!” face and a shrug.

Sue took a seat next to Bo and patted his leg. “How about you? Are you a happy bird dog this morning?”

“More like a sad tomcat,” Fred quipped. The men guffawed as Bo flashed a sarcastic expression.

“Oh, look, there’s Meg!” Sue waved as Pinky, Meg, and a young brunette woman walked in the dining area. “Meg, you look happy. And you’re so pretty in that outfit!”

“Ain’t she, though?” Pinky pulled out a chair for Meg, then turned. “And, gentlemen, this other pretty lady is Meg’s daughter, Miss Alice Dorris.”

Jack rose to extend a hand.
